History
of the Esterhazy Orchestra
The name of the Esterhazy Orchestra and Quartet and Franz Joseph Haydn
are almost inseparable. Haydn entered the service of Prince Paul Anton
in 1761 and served the House of Esterhazy until the death of Prince
Nicolaus in 1790.
During this time, Haydn composed 90 of his symphonies, and the majority
of his string quartets, chamber music and operas.
The Orchestra consisted of fourteen musicians and was enlarged or
reduced depending on the occasion.
The present orchestra was formed in 1985 by the late Courtenay Hall.
It was his idea to recreate Haydn's original ensemble by wearing the
livery of the Esterhazy family. Dress wigs, blue frock coats, breeches
and yellow waistcoats and scarlet and green moiré waistcoats
are the colours worn by the orchestra.
